Net-zero commercial and community buildings
MAKAR is leading the UK in ecological commercial and community building design, on a journey towards a net-zero built environment.
A combination of our timber-first approach, using toxin-free local natural materials, and our innovative panel technology set us apart in creating bespoke large buildings and complexes. From design through to manufacture and assembly, we connect your intentions and inspiration with the delivery of a whole, integrated, healthy product. You can find out more via MAKAR Commercial Buildings.
Our eco-friendly commercial and community buildings meet not just a net-zero standard but potentially a carbon-negative standard (dependent on factors such as usage, heating type and output from solar, etc). Our approach also makes particular sense when it needs to be demonstrated in a very tangible way that the building has excellent environmental credentials – ideal for a company or organisation with an ethos centred around sustainability.
Large scale net-zero commercial buildings constructed from timber
Over the last few years, we’ve taken on two major net zero construction projects for companies operating large sawmills – one in the north of England and one in Moray, Scotland. These very substantial buildings use locally sourced timber throughout, with the main components constructed in our workshop and then transported to site for assembly.

Examples of net-zero commercial and community buildings we can deliver
Our experience in net zero and carbon negative commercial and community buildings is considerable, and along with large buildings for sawmills, a notable example is the Gale Centre in Gairloch, Wester Ross – which is Passiv Haus Certified. The MAKAR approach can be applied to projects as diverse as distilleries, visitor centres, school buildings and small scale office buildings. See other examples of commercial and community buildings we have designed and built through our MAKAR Commercial Buildings Portfolio.

We’ve recently completed a very large project for Logie Sawmill, so here are a selection of images taken at different stages to give a sense of the scale and quality of the building
