Gibson Extension, Evanton

An extension to a modern suburban house on the edge of Evanton in which the clients wanted an additional family room to relate to the garden with views out and direct access. The extension is placed on the end of the house and accessed through the removal of an existing window from the kitchen. The unusual roof geometry was dictated by the requirement to maintain the upper floor bedroom window. The low hipped roof is supported by two exposed large section douglas fir rafters supported internally on posts. The clients were keen to have a green roof and earth filled sand bags were placed on a membrane before scattering with a wildflower/grass seed mix. Walls are clad with homegrown European larch and insulated with warmcel. The extension features a wood burning stove and the hardwood floor is made from locally sourced elm. Access to the garden is through decked areas with large glazed screens. All structural timber used in the construction was homegrown and untreated.
