Fraserburgh Housing, Feasibility

Neil Sutherland Architects were asked to participate in a series of workshops held by Aberdeenshire Council as part of their Index 21 project to develop an on-line tool to help assess housing layouts in terms of sustainability. The workshop focussed on a 35ha site in Fraserburgh. An overall masterplan was developed for the site and then typical neighbourhoods were designed in more detail. The masterplan features landscaped zones to the boundary with a hierarchical system of roads dividing the site into neighbourhoods. Houses are laid out with south facing gardens and grouped in clusters around central areas to create a clear identity. A central landscaped path provides a connection through the site and links with the adjacent supermarket. Roads are designed to reduce traffic speeds and run-off. Surface water from the site is collected in a large pond adjacent to a mixed use zone.
